Source
Every figure is derived from a filer's own IRS Form 990-PF, the annual return private foundations file, which is public record. Nothing here is estimated, modelled, or inferred. Where a filing recorded no value, the field is left empty rather than filled with a guess.
Vintage
Foundations file on their own fiscal calendars, so the year differs by filer. Read tax_year per row rather than assuming a common year. Across the current corpus:
- FY2024 — 3,079 foundations
- FY2023 — 330
- FY2025 — 157
- FY2022 — 14

What this dataset is not
The limits matter more than the headline number, so they are stated plainly:
- It is not every US private foundation. Tens of thousands file a 990-PF each year. This is the subset we have processed and published — 3,580 of them. It is not a random sample either, so it should not be treated as representative of the sector.
- One filing per foundation, not a time series. Each row summarises a single year's filing. Do not read differences between rows as change over time.
- Grant-level rows are not included. This file is one row per foundation. The individual grants behind each summary are shown on the profile pages.
- Recipient names are as filed. They are not reconciled to EINs or deduplicated, so the same organisation may appear under spelling variants across filers.
- No generated text is included. The plain-English summaries on the profile pages are written by us and deliberately excluded here, so nothing in this file can be mistaken for something the IRS received.
Updates and reuse
The file regenerates daily from the same table that powers the profile pages, so it cannot drift from the site. Underlying 990-PF data is public record and free to reuse.
