Foundation Grants by Cause

Every grant a private foundation pays out is reported on IRS Form 990-PF with a one-line purpose in the funder’s own words. Bucketing 78,159 of those purposes into plain-English themes shows which foundations actually fund which causes — and, on the state pages, where.

Two buckets are deliberately missing: “general operating support” and unclassifiable purposes. They are the largest categories in the data and the least informative — a page about them would restate the whole corpus rather than tell you anything. 11 specific causes and 436 cause-by-state pages are published.
